Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy recently discovered that TV commercials are programming your children for obesity and related health problems by marketing nutritionally empty high sugar cereals to children. There is currently a shocking epidemic of obesity and type II diabetes among young people.
The Research
Kelly Brownell, the author of the Yale study explained, "If one looks at the rank order list of the worst nutrition cereals, it's stunning how the worst cereals are marketed so aggressively to children." The Yale study found that the average American preschool child sees 642 captivating and convincing cereal ads a year.
Cereal manufacturers claim they are making cereals with more nutrition while reducing their promotional efforts to children. But the Yale Study differs with their claims. As a matter of fact, recent commercial cereal packages with bogus promotions of high nutrition are increasing. They simply add a few synthetic vitamins that were taken out of the food from processing while keeping the high sugar and toxic ingredient content intact.
When it comes to nutritional value, disregard the added nutrients promoted on cereal boxes. Good nutritional foods do not require added synthetic nutrients. It pays to avoid processed foods all together. Health food cereals, oatmeal, and other bulk cereals will benefit the kids, and you, much more than junk cereals that add synthetic vitamins and minerals.
A recent Boston Children's Hospital study determined that high glycemic index (GI) diets have contributed heavily to the epidemic of diabetes type II among young people. And this same high GI diet will inevitably lead to future cardiovascular problems as well.
High glycemic index (GI) diets are foods that contain mostly refined sugars and starches that are devoid of real nutritional value, which lead to instant glucose spikes. These glucose spikes over a period of time lead to early metabolic issues, especially around insulin. The bottom line of their research concludes that children fed GI junk food, even if "smart choice" with green check marks are displayed on the packages, are prone to obesity, diabetes and heart health issues sooner rather than later.
This route for kids' better food may be more expensive than the garbage on most supermarket shelves, which is trying to trick you with their nutritional lies. But what about doctor and medical bills as your child becomes older? Do you want to take chances with your child's future health?
There's More to Their Discoveries
The Rudd Center and Children's Hospital studies focused on foods lacking nutrition and loaded with sugar. What they failed to mention also are the sugar substitutes such as aspartame, and flavor additives, MSG, that have been found to cause serious health problems. MSG has a variety of names to disguise the fact that MSG is added into the product to deceive the health conscious. High fructose corn syrup as a sweetener is a killer too. Most food colorings are toxic, and most corn based foods are genetically modified (or GMO).
It isn't too hard to educate yourself and become a label reader for the true contents of food you purchase. But you must focus more on internet or magazine articles and books written by nutritional experts than TV and mainstream media outlets that print or mouth press releases from the commercial processed food industries. You will find it's worth the effort for you and your family to eat healthy now and avoid the expense and agony of poor health later.
